Amount of heat required to change the temperature of one unit of amount of matter under a constant pressure by one unit of temperature:

c_P = \frac{C_P}{\nu}= \frac{1}{\nu} \cdot \left( \frac{\delta Q}{\delta T} \right)_p

c_P

M L2 T−2 Θ−1J/(molK)J/(molK)

 BTU/(mol°R)

It is a material property and properly tabulated for the vast majority of materials.

The Isobaric molar heat capacity is related to Isobaric specific heat capacity  c_{Pm} and Volumetric Heat Capacity  c_{Pv} as:

(1) c_P = M \cdot c_{Pm}
(2) c_P = V_m \cdot c_{Pv}

where

M

molar mass of the substance

V_m

molar volume of the substance

The Isobaric molar heat capacity of the mixture in thermodynamic equilibrium follows the simple mixing rule:

(3) c_P = \sum_i \, x_i \, c_{P \, i}

where

x_i

mole fraction of the  i-th mixture component, subjected to \sum_i x_i= 1

c_{P\, i}

isobaric molar heat capacity of the  i-th mixture component
