Synonym: Formation Breakdown Pressure (FBP) = Fracturing Initiation Pressure (FIP) = Fracturing pressure (pb)

Minimum pressure required to initiate rock fracture.

Often abbreviated as FBP or FIP but the most common notation is p_b.

One of the popular mathematical models is given by:

(1) {\rm FBP} = p_b = 3 \, \sigma_{h, \rm min} - \sigma_{h, \rm max} + \sigma_t - p_i

where

\sigma_{h, \rm min}

minimal principal horizontal stress

\sigma_{h, \rm max}

maximal principal horizontal stress

\sigma_{t}

tensile stress

p_i

initial formation pressure
