The measurement of a straight line perpendicularly downwards from a logging reference point:

TVD = TVDSS + Logging_Reference_Elevation

where Logging_Reference_Elevation is Elevation of logging reference point above the sea level and usually selected as:

Rig Floor ( in Open Hole Logging applications )
Tubing Head ( in Cased-Hole Logging applications )
Rotary Table ( in drilling applications )
Kelly Bushing ( in drilling applications )
Sea Level ( in geodetic applications)
Ground Level ( in geodetic applications)
