There are three major types of Pipelines:

Group of smaller interconnected pipelines forming complex networks with the purpose of bringing crude oil or natural gas from several nearby wells to a treatment plant or processing facility
Gathering Pipeline 
Distribution PipelineTransportation Pipeline
A complex network of interconnected Pipeline Components collecting the fluids from many feeding terminals and transporting fluids to the centralized consuming terminal. 
Distribution Pipeline
A complex network of interconnected Pipeline components distributing the  fluids to the consuming terminals. 
Transportation PipelineA linear chain of connected pipes providing a long distance transportation of liquids and gases
