Percentage of currently recovered  hydrocarbon reserves  Q_{HC} from the Surface Tank Hydrocarbon Initial In Place (STHCIIP):

(1) {\rm RF}(t) = \frac{{Q_{HC}}(t)}{{\rm V_{\rm STHCIIP}}} \cdot 100 \%

It always ranges  0 \leq {\rm RF}(t) \leq {\rm EURF} \leq 100 \% and is related to Depletion Factor (DF) as:

(2) {\rm RF} (t) = {\rm EURF} \cdot {\rm DF}(t)

where EUR is Estimated Ultimate Recovery.

The Recovery Factor concept splits naturally into two categories:

Oil Recovery Factor (RFO)Gas Recovery Factor (RFG)
(3) {\rm RFO} = \frac{Q^{\uparrow}_O}{V_{\rm STOIIP}}
(4) {\rm RFG} = \frac{Q^{\uparrow}_G}{V_{\rm STGIIP}}

Q^{\uparrow}_O

cumulative oil production

Q^{\uparrow}_G

cumulative gas production

V_{\rm STOIIP}

STOIIP

V_{\rm STGIIP}

STGIIP
