There are many ways to quantify Tortuosity.

The simplest being as:

(1)	$\begin{array}{l}\displaystyle \tau = \frac{L}{SL}\end{array}$

where

$\begin{array}{l}L\end{array}$	path length along the trajectory
$\begin{array}{l}SL\end{array}$	straight-line distance between the end points of the trajectory
